The Importance of Pool Safety

Pool safety is a very important topic to consider if you have or you are thinking about getting a swimming pool. This article will explore several different aspects of pool safety to keep in mind so that you and your family are well protected against accidents in and around your pool.

Child Safety

Children love to play in the pool. When I was growing up, I used to love to swim for hours. There’s something that just draws most kids to the water. And let’s face it, on a hot summer day, who wouldn’t love to jump in a pool to cool off?

It’s our responsibility to make sure that kids are safe when they play in the pool. And there are several different areas to think about to achieve that safety – Securing the pool, Safety Devices, and Education.

1. Securing the pool
Today there are many different ways of making sure that little guys simply can’t get to a pool without an adult’s assistance, or at least their knowledge. First and foremost is fencing. If you have a pool, you should consider getting a fence around it, especially one with a locking mechanism that is difficult to reach for small children. And there are laws regarding pool construction in some places that require you to have a fence installed when the pool is built.

Alarm systems are another thing to think about having added to your list of pool accessories that you can’t do without. There are alarm systems that can be installed on all the doors and windows that open on the pool. There are alarms that sound when the surface of the water is disturbed. If you have a fence around your pool, you could put an alarm or chime on the entrances through the fence that would sound when the gates are opened.

2. Safety devices
Kids love their toys in the pool. So make those flotation devices something that your kids will want to play with. Pool floats for kids come in all sorts of fun shapes and sizes, such as zoo animals or heavy vehicles. Get life preservers especially for your kids. Get fun arm floats that your kids will ask you to put on them. Find items that will help them learn to swim that also float such as kick boards.

You can be the best safety device by always being present when your kids are in the pool. Depending on their age, you don’t necessarily have to be actively concentrating on them. You can have a pool-side activity as well. But just being there sends the message that you are concerned about their welfare and your reminders to be safe that you’ll undoubtedly need to call out from time to time will help them to remember too.

3. Education
I still remember going to the public pool in the town I grew up in to take swimming lessons one summer. If water activities are part of your summer, don’t forget to take your kids to swim lessons. They will help your kids to become confident around the water and to be aware of the care that they need to take, and the respect they need to have, around water.

But getting the kids educated is only half of the equation. Ask yourself when the last time was that you took a safety course. Do you remember how to give resuscitation in an emergency? Take the time to go and attend a course on water safety for adults so that you are prepared in case of an accident.

Keep Alcohol Free Beverages by the Pool

Adult Safety

Adult safety around your above ground swimming pool your inground swimming pool is just as important. Do you have a first-aid kit handy in case someone slips and falls? Just like for the kids, have you taken a pool safety course and can you give CPR in an emergency?

If you’re entertaining centered on the pool, remind guests that too much alcohol can be a very dangerous combination around the water. Drinking and boat operating is one of the leading causes of drowning in adults. Drinking and swimming can be an equally bad combination.

Pet Safety

Let's not forget our furry friends. Some of the things that will keep kids safe will also keep pets safe. Alarms for water surface and fences are good starts for your pets’ safety. Teaching your pet to swim, or checking to see if they are a breed which is able to swim is a good preventive measure to take. Also, making sure that there is a way out of the pool that your pet can access is a good safety precaution.

Conclusion

Pools can be an oasis of fun and relaxation for your family. Just remember to examine the responsibilities that come with your particular situation and take the time to put in place the safeguards that your family needs to enjoy your pool safely.

Great hub. I love the idea of the alarm, as the mother of 3 kids nothing scares me more than the silent nature of drowning. Great hub, well written and important information. Thanks!
