How to Repair Your Credit

One of the most effective things you can do after you ask yourself the question, “How do I repair my credit report?”, is to start building a history of making your payments on time. Think to yourself ‘I can repair my credit rating’ every time you send in your payments. This will help you have the motivation you need to persevere.

The next thing that you can do is to get a copy of your report from all three credit bureaus and check them for errors. If you write to them and challenge entries that are in error will force the reporting companies to provide proof that you were late. If they can’t, the entry must be removed. If this seems like a daunting task, remind yourself, ‘I am repairing my credit.’

Tips for Credit Repair

Although fixing your credit score helps alleviate your problem of repairing your credit record, there are also other various things that can be done to complement credit score repair.

1.    Create your budget by calculating your income so that you can figure out the amount of money that you can allocate to pay for your debt.

2.    Communicate with your creditors even if they have spent many months calling and harassing you to pay.  These creditors may appear cut-throat but they would much rather work with you in scheduling smaller payments than risk getting nothing in a legal case.

3.    Get any new agreements you make with your creditors in writing.  It is your defense against lost records, new management, and other similar situations.

4.    Stop spending using your credit cards or use it to the minimum.

5.    Some credit accounts need to be open, e.g., oldest accounts need to stay as the length of credit history matters most in the credit score.

6.    Start paying off your debts and regain the financial reputation that has been lost.   Be sure to make your newly negotiated lower payments every month and on time.

7.    Build up your credit history by getting a secured credit card if you don’t have the traditional credit card offered by most banks.  For sure, banks will give you a credit card because you have collateral in the form of the money that you have deposited. Usually, the credit limit is equivalent to your deposit.  Make sure you know the interest rate and the other fees associated with it as they tend to be higher than the usual.  Make sure you pay regularly and on time with these cards as well.

8.    Join a credit union as you can have a better chance of loan approval in the future than when you apply for a loan with a regular bank, since they are member owned and you are a member.

9.    If possible, avoid bankruptcy as it shows in your credit report for 10 years. Bankruptcy may seem like the easy way to go at the moment, but it will be something you pay for a very long time.  Rebuilding your credit takes even more hard work and persistence when you declare bankruptcy than it does if you only have bad credit without it.

10. Take a moment before you make every expenditure to really examine if making it is really in line with your financial goals. Would you be better off making the purchase, or paying more on an existing debt?

Don't Give Up Hope

In order to repair your credit, the most important thing to remember is to check your credit score and if there are any problems, fix it by asking the advice of an expert.   Other tips that are also important are  communicating with creditors and to paying your debts regularly and promptly after negotiating lowered payments with them. With some perseverance and hard work, you will be able to improve your credit over time.
